My first thought when I think of siblings are these three.
Blessed beyond measure to have each other, whether they realize it or not. Today we were all home together for the first time in 10 days. It felt good and it felt right. I heard from the living room,
“Mom, he’s sitting on my head!”
“She took my spot!”
“He stole my iPad”
“Don’t sit on her head!”
Ahhh…all is well….
But when I sit back and reflect on “Sibling Day” I recognize that I don’t actually know what it’s like to have a sibling, since I’m an only child.
What you might not know about me is that I DO have siblings although I’ve never met them. By faith, I trust that my oldest sibling went straight into the arms of Jesus in 1971.
My second oldest sibling is my sister. My mother held her for just a moment, before being taken from my mother’s arms to be adopted by parents she never knew. There was no paper trail. The hospital no longer exists. But in 1973 my older sister was born in a hospital in Arizona, given to parents who I hope loved her and cared for her in a way my mom couldn’t at the time.
My mom has tried to find her, but has never been successful. Only a family friend knew the details of the adoption and he was sworn to secrecy. He took that secret to the grave recently. So my mom’s heart has ached for years to meet this blonde, curly-haired, blue-eyed girl again.
So, for all of you who have siblings, make sure you give them a shout out today. Give them a hug if they are close by, call them and tell them you love them, text them and tell them what you appreciate about them, offer forgiveness where there is hurt.
If you don’t have siblings whom you are close to, remember that it is possible to “choose” your siblings. I desire the deepness of relationship that I can only imagine comes from calling someone “sister” or “brother.” Although not blood relatives, I’m thankful for those who have fulfilled the Bible verse for me, “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24.
To you, I wish you a Happy Siblings Day. <3
